A book club, based in Gulfport, Florida, graciously invited Jill to speak about her new novel, "My Best and Last" and I was honored to be her guest.
The group, which has been meeting for over eight years, maintains a small, intimate membership, reading one book a month to foster deep and meaningful discussions. The members were enthusiastic about Jill's book, offering their praise and sharing their favorite parts. Jill was delighted to answer questions and was given the opportunity to read the synopsis of her second book in the series, currently under review with the publisher.
Regarding "My Best and Last", the group particularly appreciated the strong female characters, the inclusion of sexual activity in older women, the tarot cards at the start of each chapter, and the emotional depth and believability of the imperfect characters. When asked about her inspiration, Jill explained that while her characters are inspired by real people in her life, sometimes the protagonists like Cal seem to write themselves, with Jill feeling as if she's channeling their thoughts directly.
This evening was truly special, set in a beautifully decorated house that radiated warmth and hospitality. The atmosphere was welcoming, filled with friendly faces and engaging conversations. Even the dinnerware was elegantly arranged and beautifully adorned, adding a sophisticated touch.
We enjoyed a fabulous dinner, followed by a delicious key lime pie for dessert. The conversations flowed easily, touching on various topics, including the ongoings in Gulfport. It was a relaxing evening and a welcome change in my routine. Meeting new people and witnessing their genuine interest and support for Jill's work was heartwarming.
Book clubs play a crucial role in fostering a love for reading and promoting intellectual growth. They provide a structured yet social setting for individuals to discuss literature, share diverse perspectives, and engage in stimulating conversations. This communal activity not only enhances comprehension and critical thinking but also builds a sense of community and connection among members. Through book clubs, readers can explore new genres and authors they might not have discovered on their own, while also developing a deeper appreciation for the written word. In essence, book clubs are a vital part of cultural and personal enrichment, encouraging lifelong learning and meaningful relationships. When I first moved to Gulfport in 2021, I joined my first book club and although members have scattered, we all maintain a close friendship to this day.
Both Jill and I are immensely grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to share this memorable evening with such a wonderful group. The support and camaraderie we experienced are truly invaluable, and we look forward to future interactions with these lovely people.
Thank you for making us feel so welcome and for your continued support of Jill's literary journey!
